Technical Note ADC-36

Grinding Performance of Diamond Brush

Introduction

Chamfering and honing on the cutting edge of throw away insert tools are very important process, because it definitely influences the performance of cutting tools. A diamond brush (a nylon fiber brush including diamond abrasives in fibers) recently started to be used in this process of cutting edge chamfering and honing. This Technote describes the grinding performance of the diamond brushes in comparison with the silicon carbide brushes in the brief simulation of chamfering and honing on the throw away inserts of tungsten carbides, cermets and ceramics. The effect of particle size of diamond abrasives on the grinding performance is also investigated.

Summary of Test Methods

The setup for the grinding test which simulates for chamfering and honing application of throw away inserts is shown in Figure 1. The principal evaluation items in this tests are as follows:

-Material removal rate -Grinding ratio

-Workpiece surface finish -Tangential grinding force

-Workpiece temperature increase in grinding

Brush tool specifications and test conditions are described in Tables 1 and 2. Table 3 gives the characteristics of the materials ground in these tests.

Table 1 Brush Specifications
Abrasive and Abrasive Content :Diamond (16wt%)
SiC ; C Abrasive (30wt%)
Brush Size :150D * 6W mm
Brush Material :Nylon (Gritty-ORK600)

Table 2 Test Conditions
Spindle Speed : 1200 RPM
Depth of Cut : 8 mm
Grinding Time : 30 min
Oscillation : 16 cycle / min
( Oscillation Width : 3 mm)

Test Results

Conclusions

The diamond brushes exhibits far superior brushing performance in comparison with the brush of C abrasives, besides surface finish. Surface finish results reflect the diamond abrasive sharpness and tend to much rougher than with C abrasive brush.

For the equivalent characteristics of finished surface, diamond micron powder shall be recommended, which still has the significant advantage in material removal rate over C abrasive brush.

The diamond brushes are expected to show an excellent performance in the cutting edge treatment of various kings of tools as well as in other applications to remove the surface portion of materials and/or to generate some textures on it.
